Hippowaste helps Lovell boost recycling levels in Sheffield

Housing refurbishment specialist Lovell has boosted recycling levels as it carries out work on a major housing programme in Sheffield with the help of HIPPOWASTE, which offers eco-friendly, innovative waste management solutions across the UK.

In Sheffield, Lovell is one of five constructor partners currently delivering the £669 million Decent Homes housing refurbishment programme with Sheffield Homes, on behalf of Sheffield City Council. In 2007, the company swapped traditional skips for HIPPOBAGs, a flexible and environmentally-friendly bag alternative to the skip. The switch to a more eco-
friendly solution has enabled Lovell to achieve a recycling level of around 70 per cent. .

“We are always looking for ways to improve environmental performance and the introduction of HIPPOBAGs has helped us do this,” said Chris Guirdham, regional business systems Manager at Lovell. “This has all led to improved relationships between ourselves and both residents and the local authority, while the recycling levels we have achieved are a key factor for us and these are reflected in our current KPI scores.”

Lovell used the MIGHTYBAG version of the flexible HIPPOBAGs which opens out to 4 cubic yards and holds up to 1.5 tonnes of bulky waste materials including old bathroom suites and kitchen units. Once filled HIPPOWASTE collect, transport and dispose of the bags and their contents in an ethical manner, recycling as much material as possible.

“HIPPOWASTE provide us with clear reporting that shows where our waste is going and our recycling levels,” said Chris. “We can then feed this back to our client and ensure we are meeting all current environmental legislation. The system also improves our productivity as HIPPOWASTE is responsible for the disposal of all waste materials at recycling centres.”
